Abortion and the Meaning of Life: Some Anthropological Implications of the Viability Standard

On March 3, 2022, the Catholic Law community gathered for the second program in the lecture series organized by the Law and the Human Person examining The Future of Roe v. Wade? Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The afternoon program entitled, “Abortion and the Meaning of Life: Some Anthropological Implications of the Viability Standard,” featured David Crawford, J.D., S.T.D., Dean and Associate Professor of Moral Theology and Family Law at Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage & Family, who discussed the anthropological implications of the Dobbs v. Jackson case. Crawford teaches and writes in the areas of fundamental moral theology, bio- and sexual ethics, marriage and family, and law.

The Role of Adoption in a Post-Dobbs America

Catholic Law’s Center for Law and the Human Person hosted a panel discussion on the role of infant adoption after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overruled Roe v. Wade. The program, “The Role of Adoption in a Post-Dobbs America” was held on campus in the William J. Byron S.J. Auditorium.

Inaugural Spring Symposium: Rightly Ordered Law and the Flourishing of the Human Person

On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, the Center for Law and the Human Person (CLHP) at The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law (Catholic Law) hosted its inaugural conference entitled, “Rightly Order Law and the Flourishing of the Human Person.” The conference opened with remarks by Stephen C. Payne, Catholic Law’s Dean and Knights of Columbus Professor of Law, followed by an introduction by CLHP Director, Elizabeth Kirk. Introducing the general theme of the conference, Kirk emphasized the role that law can and should play in orienting the human person toward virtue and fulfilling his given end. Kirk also cited Pope Saint John Paul II in observing that law must respect and protect human dignity or it risks subjecting persons to manipulation and violation.

What is Freedom For? A Reminder from Veritatis Splendor on its 30th Anniversary

On Tuesday, October 24, The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law (Catholic Law) hosted the Rev. Aquinas Guilbeau, O.P., to present a lecture entitled, “What is Freedom For? A Reminder from Veritatis Splendor on its 30 th Anniversary.” Sponsored by the Catholic Law’s Center for Law and the Human Person, Guilbeau—a Dominican friar who serves as both University Chaplain and Vice President of Ministry and Mission—reflected on the purpose of human freedom as it is explained in the encyclical Veritatis Splendor, promulgated by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

Faith in Action Lecture: “Top Ten Tips for Living and Lawyering Authentically”

Catholic Law’s Center for Law and the Human Person will host the final installment of its 2023-2024 Faith-in-Action lecture series on Tuesday, March 19. The series, which brings Catholic lawyers to discuss the integration of the Catholic faith and legal practice, will conclude with Catholic University’s deputy general counsel, Jennie Bradley Licther, who gave a talk on “Ten Tips for Living and Lawyering Authentically.”
